OUR HISTORY
Killcare Frigid Digits was formed in 1976 and was known as Hardys Bay Frigid Digits Winter Swimming Club until April 2016 when its name was changed to what it is known as today.
In 2016 the Killcare Frigid Digits Winter Swimming Club celebrated 40 years with the Winter Swimming Association of Australia. Our members are proud that since inception we have had swimmers competing in every Australian Winter Swimming Championships. Barney Reeves and Ron Malcolm were our first competitors in 1976. Barney Reeves, a Foundation Member & Patron sadly passed away in June 2015 just 2 months short of his 100th birthday. He was still swimming at 91yrs of age. Ron Malcolm, also a Foundation Member, is our current President. There is a great spirit of comradeship within our members and we welcome men, women & children of any swimming ability to join our ranks. The Killcare Frigid Digits swim every Sunday at 9.30am. We do not have a pool so we anchor some ropes each week. We have heats for 30 meters and 50 meters. |
WHO WE ARE
With swimmers in heats of five people, starting from the rocks and swimming parallel to the shore and no black line to follow, it becomes a challenge for some to swim straight. This provides onlookers with some good laughs. It all works very well except in really rough seas and can result in a challenge for our timekeepers.
Despite our limitations we have quite a few members who have made Finals competing in the Australian Winter Swimming Championships and some who have won medals including our women. On several occasions we have managed to snare a win in the "closest to time relays ". A recent good result was 2015 in Wagga Wagga when our 4 person relay was closest to time in the " dash for cash". Not easy for our handicapper trying to convert a time swam in the ocean to a pool time. Our pointscore starts on the first Sunday in May and our season finishes with our Championships on the last Sunday in August. We think we are possibly one of only a few clubs who hold their weekly races in the ocean. We construct our pool in the ocean by securing a lane rope to the rocks at the end of Putty Beach, take the rope parallel to the shore and at the 50m mark drop an anchor and then another lane rope stretches to the beach, secured to the sand by another anchor and presto, that is our pool constructed. |
