Bondi Mermaids Swimming Club
Who We Are
This swimming club was founded in 1992 by a group of women who were keen winter swimmers. In 2017 the club celebrates 25 years of winter swimming.
The club is named after the famous Mermaids on the Rock sculpture at North Bondi. (This statue was later destroyed by storms). Our emblem is a stylised form of this statue. Team colours are black and purple.
Early on the Winter Swimming association would not accept women but Mermaids were very vocal and led the change. Prior to that Mermaids had initiated and run two very successful carnivals. These were attended by women from other winter swimming clubs. The Southern Metropolitan was the first carnival to accept women swimmers. Our mermaids have always been a part of the officiating volunteers and have successfully hosted the Southern Metropolitans at least 3 times.
Swimming starts at 8am every Sunday between May and September in the Bondi Icebergs pool. Races start with 200 and 400 metre nominated time swims followed by 50m, 30m, 100m and 50m form events. Male and female swimmers are welcome.
